The High Pyrenees Gin-clear freestones, glacial lakes, and spring creeks for 3 and 4-weight rods. The Lowlands Cold water fisheries with healthy trout populations for 5 and 6-weight rods. The Brown trout is the predominant species. The native ones are an old sub-species of Mediterranean lineage, partially hybridized in many basins for decades. At high country freestones, some of them show four dark stripes, hence its pseudonym of “Zebra Trout.” Rainbows were first introduced into Pyrenean waters more than 60 years ago. Rainbows are generally more aggressive than browns but, fly fishing for the large rainbows that inhabit some of these waters could be a true challenge. Many headwaters in the Pyrenees were stocked with Brook Trout back in the 1950s. However, they are only found in specific streams and lakes nowadays. They are rarely seen with other trout and readily rise to dry flies. Powerful native barbel living on freestones are great fighters and fun on the dries. If you want to give it a try while fishing for Trout, these barbels will test your ability to sight cast accurately. |
