Located in the small town of Playa Larga, known for the historic Bay of Pigs invasion, the Georgiana liveaboard is a highly recommended trip by Yellow Dog. It can accommodate small groups and offers six staterooms with private bathrooms. The maximum group size is 8 anglers for a full week of fishing. Additionally, the boats used during the trip can accommodate both single and double occupancy, ensuring that each angler has plenty of time to fish alone at some point during the week.
The Zapata peninsula (Cienaga de Zapata) is a vast wetland spanning approximately 2,200 square miles in the Caribbean. It was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2001 due to its rich biodiversity of birds, crocodiles, turtles, and fish - including many endemic species. The peninsula remains relatively untouched by humans, except for channels carved through the swamp by pirates looking for hardwood to make charcoal. The freshwater mixing with saltwater along the southern coast creates an ideal environment for fish to thrive. Cuba's waters provide excellent opportunities for flats fishing throughout the year. The most popular months are from October through July, but discounted packages can often be found during August and September - considered off-peak months due to being peak hurricane season in the Caribbean. However, fishing during these summer months can be outstanding as it coincides with a migration of tarpon passing through Cuban waters from April to July, adding to the already abundant populations of bonefish, permit, snook, and tarpon. March through July is considered high season due to demand from anglers seeking warmth during colder months in the Northern Hemisphere and the presence of migratory tarpon. On the other hand, low season runs from August to February and offers great value for those looking for more affordable trips. There are fewer tourists in Cuba during these months, making it a great time to visit Havana. Anglers may also find warmer temperatures in August and September, ideal for tarpon and permit fishing. While October and November typically experience the best weather of the year as they fall between hurricane season and winter cold fronts. However, December to February may bring colder temperatures and winds due to winter storms that last around 3 days, but the fishing can still be great during these months - especially before or after a cold front when fish are feeding heavily. |
